OUR PROJECTS
Together with foreign NGOs, Higher Youths prepares projects which focus on the involvement of Maltese youths and other foreign youths, to join mixed teams of scientists and ecologists in foreign countries and undertake activities related to the environment, conservation and sustainability. The activities are scheduled and led by youth leaders.
The youths are involved in every stage of the project, from planning hands-on activities, to teambuilding activities and fundraising. By being involved in intercultural activities, young people learn to cooperate with people from other backgrounds and cultures and are more tolerant towards other persons' values and behaviour. They are more receptive to Europe's multiculturalism and this also kindles an interest in understanding what it means to be an EU citizen and the opportunities that come with it. Such projects target the development of foreign languages, interpersonal and social competences as well as cultural awareness and expression. Activities included in the projects enable youths to sharpen their practical skills (planning, organising, management), develop problem solving and analytical skills and improve science and technological competences.
The expedition experiences allow youths to get a clearer idea about their future and professional aspirations. When involved in expeditions, group leaders and participants work alongside professionals and therefore the quality of activities and learning outcomes are constantly monitored.
The organisation also initiated and monitors projects which focus on developing youths into active citizens, by encouraging them to expand their horizons and participate more actively in both the social and political life of their community. The organisation set up a programme where youths work with the local council and are actually involved in collecting school recyclable rubbish daily, keeping the school premises and environment clean and enjoyable.
The organisation also promotes environmental awareness on school premises through educational environmental visits, it organises cleaning campaigns in a variety of localities, Earth Day celebrations, and takes students on educational walks around the archipelago to learn about and appreciate local flora and fauna. Youths are also always provided with the opportunity to review their learning and provide feedback on anything they feel worked well or could be changed in the future, so that the organisation can efficiently learn to target the youths' needs and help each one of them in their personal development.
